What makes the best compost?

New flower bed - fed with composted soil
As I said earlier for my recent birthday, my supportive parents gave me my first composter bin! It rotates easily and is small enough that it's semi-portable - I'm in heaven :)

So now that I've got a fancy rotating composter, what do I put it in it to ensure my plants get the best natural nutrition possible?

Here's a list of 10 common things I'm using in my composter:

1. Egg shells
2. Coffee grounds
3. Green veggies
4. Banana peels
5. Poultry droppings
6. Old poultry cedar chip bedding
7. Small twigs
8. Leaves
9. Old potting soil
10. Earth worms

I've read keeping the compost pile at the correct pH balance is the most important rule and some ole' timer even suggest using your own urine to help add important nitrogen into the mix. Plants LOVE nitrogen, but I'm not sure I can actually collect my urine :) We'll see just how "Natural" I dare to go!  Another important rule is NEVER let it get too wet or your pile will get moldy.

So I'll keep giving my bin a turn every two days or so and hope that by the fall I have some dark, rich golden soil!

Have you ever composted? If so, what's your winning mix?

Thanks again,
